Aclient brought in a Hitachi 3 Gig

A client brought in a Hitachi 3 Gig Hard drive. He indicated that he attempted to install it on hi current IBM laptop (500MHz). He indicated that it tells him the hard drive is locked. I attempted to use various safotware to low levell format the hard drive. I cannot get it to for mat and one mess I received is that it is the wrong DOS version. Ant suggestions on getting this thing formated?
