Acessing OWA via an alternate port prevents us from deleting email

We're trying to set up external access to our Exchange 2010 server via port 1443 since our router is currently using port 443 for VPN access. We have external port 1443 forwarded to port 443 on the Exchange server.

Normally, external users should be able to access the Outlook Web App via this link:
[ignore] ip address>:1443/owa/[/ignore]

Unfortunately, this does not work. You get a 404 error with the following address (note the lack of the port number):
[ignore] ip address>/owa/auth/logon.aspx?url=https://<external ip address>/owa/&reason=0[/ignore]

You can only get to the logon page via a link like this (note the presence of the port number):
[ignore] ip address>:1443/owa/auth/logon.aspx?&url=https://<external ip address>:1443/owa/[/ignore]

If we set up the appropriate bindings for port 1443 on the "Default Web Site" in IIS Manager (and forward port 1443 to 443 on the router), we can use the short URL, but we cannot move or delete email within the OWA interface. You get the following message:
"An unexpected error occurred and your request couldn't be handled."
"The entire error report is listed below: Show Report"
If you click ‘Show Report’, it displays:
"An unexpected error occurred and your request couldn't be handled."

If we change the port forwarding settings on our router so that the Exchange server (instead of the VPN server) uses port 443, everything works fine (i.e. we can use the shorter link and we don’t have to include the port number).

Is there any way to make the Exchange server accessible via port 1443 and still be able to move and delete email?

Think you'll have to get EWS listening on port 443 too. Moving VPN from 443 to 1723 is probably going to be better for you and easier for your users.
