Hi

I'm running XP on my laptop.

To gain HDD space I bought a new HDD, fitted it and installed XP. The old HDD was fitted into an external USB caddy.

Windows won't let me access the old drive - it lets me into the root and windows directories, but not my old personal folders (under the Documents and Settings heirarchy).

I have the admin password for the windows installation on the old HDD, is there any way to access the data and copy it?

Thanks

You should be able to take ownership of the folders and then be able to access the folders. Right click the top level folder, go to Security, then Advanced, then the Owner tab. Click on the new Admin as the owner, then check "replace owner in subcontainers and objects" then click OK.
Should do the trick.

Or boot up using a Bart PE disk and then you can use the file management utility to copy from the old disk to the new.

Taking ownership is the best way because then you will be able to access the old drive any time from WITHIN Windows without having to boot off a boot disk.

Thanks for the help.

For future reference, no one mentioned that you can't do the above in XP Home unless you boot into safe mode and log in as the Administrators (not any administrator).

You failed to mention that you where using HOME... thus all answers where generally applicable to W2k, XP PRO, and VISTA...
