After finding a similar thread from yesetrday on another website I thought I'd enquire here while i wait for AVG to get back to me.

This morning all four of my Acer Power M8 PCs running Win XP and AVG8 SBS edition kept rebooting just before the Windows logon box appeared (applying compter settings). This does not happen to any other of my Win XP / Win 2000 machines, all with latest service packs and same edition AVG as these AcerPower M8s.

Anyway, it transpires that once I remove AVG8 from these systems they boot fine. I've tried various attempts at reloading AVG onto these systems (without firewall, without remote admin, antivrus only etc) but they all result in the machine not being able to get to the login prompt.

If I turn off reboot-on-error when I press F8 on bootup, the bit that it normally reboots gives me a BSOD with:

Code:
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Technical Information:

STOP 0x000000050 (0x9BBAA945, 0x00000000, 0x8053CF32, 0x0000000)

has anyone else had this? I'm loath to start removing Acer related programs as I guess it's going to be the AV at fault! However, I am stuck withut an AV on these machines and waiting on AVG.

Thanks

Dan

Solved, after 5 hours of uninstalling it seems that the recent updates don't like "E-Lock" software that comes on mobile computers but is on all of my Acers. Uninstalled it and reloaded AVG and everything now works.

I don't know how you ever tracked this down to eLock but a BIG thank you.

We had the same problem and removing eLock fixed the continuous reboot on the Acer desktops.

Great job.

Thanks, it was actually Grisoft who came up with the exact problem as a suggestion.

The only work I did is actually pinpointing that it was a conflict with AVG and that was based on a hunch from another thread. It's a good job I had four of the same machine otherwise I would have spent a lot more time trying to fathom it out!

I asked AVG how long they knew about this and they were keen to point out that the Acer driver is at fault.

Interestingly, as this will very likely effect all versions of AVG 8, there was no mention of this problem on the AVG Free support forum.
But there is now!
Thanks again Dan.

Using AVG Free on an Acer Travelmate 5100 laptop.

I've done 3 AVG updates since the original post and had no issues with AVG causing reboots. eLock is installed on my machine by default but I don't use it.

When I saw the original post I manually updated the definitions and then did a hard boot. I had no problems then or after the two hard boots since.

Cheers.
