Have a problem with Accpac 6.5 DOS when processing an invoice. Extremely slow processing time.

Network setup...
12 machines peer to peer

1 Win XP box setup as file server
6 machines running win98
3 machines running xp

All machines have a shortcut to the the file server running Accpac from it.

The XP machines are newer and runs quite fast.

The 98 machines are much slower particularly when processing an invoice.

The network was completly re-wire and it helped with processing orders but the invoicing was is still too slow.

Question is, can Accpac (or is it recommended) be installed on the individual machines and access the Accpac database on the file server. If so, will it increase proformance?

If anyone have any other suggestions as to increase performance, please let me know.

Yes it can, but no, it won't.

If you want performance improvements, you probably need to purge some data.

ACCPAC Plus should not have speed problems on any system or setup. As Jay has said, installing on the workstation will not improve speed and will create a whole bunch of other concerns.

You should look at factors which will affect your network speed. disable the realtime check on your ACCPAC data on your virus checker.

In my experience working with ACCPAC, it tends to run better as a Fat client and not run the app from the server unless the server handles well.

One thing worth mentioning, you said there were 12 machines, but I only counted 10 in the list. If there are 2 other machines connecting to the XP box for uses other than ACCPAC, it will seriously slow the network down since XP/2K/ME/98/95 can only handle 10 connections simultaeneously. The XP machines will take precedence (sp?) and work better, but i've had issues with 98 machines working with newer PCs.

Anyway, this limit is by design. Microsoft doesn't want people to run machines as servers without buying their Server OS. This is a money making scheme from them. Nothing else.

Hope this helps some.

I think Jerle is referring to ACCPAC Advantage. Do NOT run ACCPAC Plus from each workstation - you're looking for problems and there is NO benefit in terms of speed.
