We have been running accpac trouble free installed on a W2K small business server. Recently the server suffered a complete corruption of the file system on the partion housing W2K and Accpac. Our data is backed up and safe.

Workstations have been accessing the server via terminal services. No problems at all.

We are questioning whether we should install Data on the server and Accpac on the workstations ???

What min specs do workstations need ?? At Present any old workstation works fine and we can Remote Access Server from external locations.

We have max 5 users working with accpac. The Issue is performance for users.

Should we leave well enough alone. I don't need to be upgrading a bunch of workstations.

Thought so.... I hear you load and clear. But are there adavantages to running Accpac on workstations??

Pre version 5.0 there was an advantage to installing locally. You have the old Realizer version of Accpac and the issue was that screens were taking time to compile before they were used locally. Post version 5.0 all of the screens became ActiveX controls and thus there was less compiling going on before each screen was executed.

Now - 4.2 came out a long time ago and computers were slower then so I would expect that the improved hardware and network speeds will more than compensate for the advantage of installing locally.

Finally - your version is old enough that finding good support is getting harder to find so take Tuba's advice and stay with Status Quo.

IMHO there was never (since version 1.0A) any advantage in installing Accpac programs on the local C: drive. I have always done server/workstation installs and these work well with all versions of Accpac. It cuts down on maintenance (installing service packs, custom & modified reports, etc) and I do not see any reason for installing programs locally, unless of course you just want to create extra work for yourself.
To get back to the original question: if it ain't broke don't fix it.
