We need to upgrade an increasingly unreliable server. (Unexpcted freezes / re-booting etc.)
It is a PIII 800hz twin CPU, 1mb Ram, Raid 120mb HD etc. machine with Windows 2000 server.

Suggested New Server Specs are:
PROCESSOR - Intel Core2 QUAD 2.40Ghz - (LGA775) 1066Mhz FSB
MAINBOARD - MSI P35-NEO-F LGA775 - IntelP35 (Core 2) 1066Mhz FSB, PCIe, GBLAN, 4xSATA, 1xIDE, DualChDDR2
MEMORY - DDR2 2GB 1066Mhz Dual Channel
RAID 2 x 250gb HD

We are hoping to Ghost / mirror the Current HD. We'd rather not have to re-install Accpac which has aprox 6-10 users (max) connecting via terminal services.

Other processor intensive aps running on the server are MSAccess database

1. What problems might we expect apart from the obvious hardware driver issues?
2. Would the latest Server software improve performance of the underlying Pervasive and MSaccess databases? We don't have a problem with Win 2000 server at present.
3. Will we have any problems with Accpac 4.2 as a result ?

I have had good advice on the hardware end but they ask is there any issues with Accpac.

You'll be fine, version 4.2 is a pretty simple creature, and performance will be drastically faster.

Yes, Accpac 4.2 will be fine.
You can copy the Accpac program and data files over to the new server, and then run workstation setup to install the client files on the server.

Ettienne thanks, but I thought if we mirror the HD we wont have to do anything.

In any case can you explain what you mean by client files on the server.

JON

I'm assuming your TS users are going to run Accpac on the new server, if so you need to be able to run Accpac on that server, and for that to work you need to at least run workstation setup on the server.

Sorry to bug you but I'm not sure what you are refering to I can't see 'workstation setup' in either Accpac>tools or WIN2k Administrative Tools.

I still can't see the need. If we mirror the HD won't the workstations see exactly what they did before ???
Remember It's not a server software upgrade.
Jon

It's in {accpac programs}\WSSETUP\SETUP.EXE. If you're not going to run Accpac on the server, you won't need to run it.

Tuba

We've got the server up but can't find the workstation setup you mention. This is Accpac 4.2 remember.

The error we get on opening any company is
'cannot open databse error=49153' This comes up just after the Pervasive2000 splash screen.

We've found
E:\ACCPAC\Ptf's\AP4.2\SP4\DISK1\setup.exe
E:\ACCPAC\Ptf's\AR4.2\Sp4\DISK1\setup.exe
E:\ACCPAC\Ptf's\IC4.2\SP1\DISK1\setup.exe
E:\ACCPAC\Ptf's\NT\setup.exe
E:\ACCPAC\Ptf's\OE4.2\SP1\DISK1\setup.exe
E:\ACCPAC\Ptf's\PO4.2\SP1\DISK1\setup.exe
E:\ACCPAC\Ptf's\SM4.2\Sp2\DISK1\setup.exe
E:\ACCPAC\RUNTIME\a4wsetup.exe
This last one doesn't seem to be what we are looking for.

and several setups under \seagate software

Any Clues

Hmmm, let's remember... I remember Accpac for DOS version 4 circa 1989, and Accpac for Windows version 1.0 circa 1994... Yeah, I know what 4.2 is supposed to look like.

1. Error 49153 means that Pervasive isn't installed (or running) on the folder where the data files are located.

2. All of those files are just service packs. Look for E:\ACCPAC\WSSETUP\SETUP.EXE. If it's not there, then you need to find your original System Manager CD's, reinstall System Manager with a custom install, and make sure that the "Workstation Setup Files" box is checked. And re-run E:\ACCPAC\Ptf's\SM4.2\Sp2\DISK1\setup.exe when you're done.

Nice to know you are that old !!!

For those of you following this thread we have got Accpac running now using terminal services from client workstations.

Turns out that we didn't exactly get a mirror of the Server HD. I'm not completely up with this but it involved a Win2000 repair at some stage in the process and some services that were in a strange location rather than ..\win\nt\system32. Therefore the Pervasive services were not loading coz the registry got out of whack.

Ran the Pervasive install disc and all was well.

Now tuba ... my theory is if it's not broken don't fix it. Accpac 4.2 has been pretty good to us and we don't seem to have a need to upgrade. We are at the very bottom end of businesses that can justify the expense of Accpac software. Hence my need to do things on the cheap.

Many thanks for the help and without this forum I'd be at the mercy of those greedy Accpac service providers god luv 'em.
JON

Dear Jon-Sir
Your reference to "those greedy Accpac..............." was not well received.
Who in h#$% do you think is actually answering most of the posts on this forum??????????

Aww, heck, I didn't take it personally. Most consultants are greedy, that's how we pay our kids' college tuitions. :)

Actually we did use the services of an Accpac Partner. He did a fine job of guiding us through the re-install, and registry checks etc.. But I try to run my small business efficiently. I don't mind paying but I don't like to be treated as if I was spending coporate dollars. We all know that corporate dollars don't have the same value as private dollars. I guess I was a little harsh.

I certainly wasn't trying to offend.
My apologies.
