I have a pc running win 2k and about 3 to 4 times a day a window will appear asking for a password, after typing the password which it will not accept the machine locks out, sometimes after rebooting the machine and checking user manager the machine is unlocked by it self.

Anyone come accross anything like this before.

Any help more than welcome

Marzy.

Hi,

Any idea what this window is? Is it a screensaver password (if you press ctrl alt del then space is this the same window?)

If not, the next time it appears, see if there are any clues as to what it is? It may be a trojan and I would run good up to date spyware checkers and antivirus package over the machine just to check.

In most cases, this is occurs because the user is logged into another computer somewhere. The user then changes password on another computer and the old one will keep trying every so often with the old password. Depending on your security setup for your users, the old computer probably locks out the account after failing so many times (check the security logs on your DC to see a failing computer on security) and it's probably configured to reset locked out accounts after so many minutes, which would explain why you regain the ability to connect after a while.

The win 2k machine is part of an NT domain, the pc did have a trojan on it but has been removed, which we though this was causing the problems, but it is still doing the same.
The password box is just normally for Outlook as it looses the connection.

Thanks for your help.
