I'm posting this on this forum because this machine is a ML370G1.
I was reinstalling Windows 2000 after a power loss that made the machine unbootable. It was time for a complete redo anyway, so I didn't mind that much. I was at the screen that asks you what you want to do about partitions on the available drives. I saw my main RAID logical drive and partitioned it amd formatted it and then accidentally installed a new partition the entire size of the disk (200GB) on a Maxtor USB disk that previously held backups. I didn't re-format - just installed the partition. The windows screen told me this drive's space was unallocated.
I used Get Data Back to scan - I thought I had formatted the Maxtor with NTFS originally, but since Get Data Back showed absolutely nothing for a directory/file tree after the scan, maybe it was FAT after all. After approx 36 hours of scanning I'm reluctant to start over with the FAT version without more information.
My question is this - Is installing a new partition fatal? Can I use Partition Magic or something else to delete the new partition and leave the previous one intact or is that just incredibly naive? I' m scanning now with the software recommended by Seagate which looks like it uses one version for both FAT and NTFS, so maybe that will turn up something. The Get Data Back/NTFS showed a list of files at various location numbers while it was scanning, but when it came to the next step of displaying a tree, there was nothing.
Is it likely to recover the data from this situation? I was also having RAID accelerator battery problems and a failed hard drive which must have addled my brain. All have been replaced, but I need to get the data back.
Thanks for any info.
Diane
