I have an Access 2000 db that I have run the compact and repair tool on many times before. Today when using the tool in the bottom left of the monitor screen I can see it would run through compacting, but not repair. The status only completes 1/2 way and the word "compacting" stays up. I left alone for 1 hour, same status. The process does make a copy of this database in the directory, of course named db1.mdb. What can be done to correct? Thanks in advance for any help.

You may already know all of this, but I thought I would share my experiences with you just in case.
When I had a password on our DB that was not split and replicated (DB was all-one), it would not repair, I had to have the network folks restore a back up from the night before. Once I removed the password option, the restore began to work. If you want to have a DB password, what I did was restructured the DB: split and replicated. The compact and restore works great--haven't had problems this way yet, and we have security now this way. Sometimes it will not repair if in a multi-user setting, someone else is accessing the DB--make sure everyone is out. If you can't then make a copy, compact and restore that, and then redirect the shortcuts if any.

Tony Toews has an excellent page on data corruption.

Head to the lower half of the document; he even mentions your case:

If you can open the MDB but can't compact it try the code at Q298174 ACC2000: Sample Code to Import All Database Objects. You may discover specific corrupted objects which you will need to bypass and import those objects from a backup.
