In Nautilus I type smb: in the address line to start Samba.

I can see all of the NT, 2000 and 98 shares on the network.

When I double click on a computer I am prompted for a Windows user name and password.

I type domain\username and enter my password.

I am able to see the shares but when I attempt to open a share I am told that I do not have permission.

I can access the shares from a Windows computer so I know I have the correct permissions.

Why can't I access these shares from Linux? Is there something in Samba that needs to be set up?

1. Are you signed in as (and 'registered as') a valid user of a valid group existing on both Windows and Linux?
2. What are the permissions on the directories/folders/files you're trying to access?
3. Are you using just Samba, NFS or both?
4. How is security set up on your smb.conf file for the particular share you want to access?
5. What are your network settings on your Win boxes?
6. Are you using user-level or share-level access from Windows?

Can you post a copy of your conf files (with critical info like IP's and names changed of course)? It would be easier for everyone to troubleshoot if the actual configuration was available.

I suggest you get LinNeighborhood off sourceforge-once you compile and install it-it makes mounting Windows shares from 98,NT, 2000 a piece of cake-the README's are very helpful. The one thing you have to do-is make sure you are logging in as an account that exists on the Windows box.....

Thanks everybody.

I seem to be able to mount NT shares from Linux by typing into the address bar the following: smb://username:password@ntservername/sharename.

The samba.config file states that the passwords are encrypted. This is an extra step but it works good enough for a beginner. When I learn more I will beat up on it later.
