Accessing the CLI correctly using hyperterminal thru the console 2

I need to access the ASA 5510 to confirm configuration.
I connected my rj45 to rj45 rollover console cable to the asa console and then to my laptop ethernet port. I then used hyper-terminal to connect using COM 3 and then configured 9600 baud 8 none 1 hardware flow control. Hyper-terminal connected BUT NO CISCO PROMPT APPEARED!? THE SCREEN WAS BLANK! A consultant set this up. Did said consultant block out the CLI? Am I doing something wrong?

is come 3 your only option? are you sure you are in the 'blue' console port? while in hyperterm, click on 'restore defaults' instead of the drop downs....click 'Enter' a few times as well

it doesn't connect to your ethernet port. it connects to your SERIAL port. you may have damaged the port by doing that.

I am using an rj45 connector on one end of the rollover and a rj45 on the other end. I got it from cables and kits. It came this way. Could this be an issue?

The cable is the exact same color, flatness and size however it doesn't have an DB-9 connector instead it has an RJ45 connector on that end. It's has an RJ45 on both ends. I got it from cables and kits.

there is an rj45 to db9 adapter that comes with the asa.

We didn't get an rj45 to db9 adapter. However I will buy one immediately. Are there any pinout configurations I need to be aware of?

I was under the impression that a rj45 to rj45 rollover cable would suffice. It has to be db-9
