Accessing selected text from HTML documents

How can one move selected text from a web page or e-mail document to a VB application to obtain a service based on the word content? It's possible via a copy, and test clipboard (under control of a timer,) but the method requires dexterity and is time consuming. Is there aything to simulate the .seltext feature of a .txt or .rtf document?
