Accessing Samba share through Windows

I just did a destructive re-install of RedHat 7.2 (due to an issue with the partition configuration). I'm trying to get Samba up and running again, and I've almost succeeded except for one issue. I can view all the Windows machines on the network and access them just fine from the Linux machine. However, when I try to go into Network Neighborhood and access the shares I set up on the Linux machine, I get an "Enter Network Password" dialog box. I've set up share level access and made all the shares public. I was able to access the previous installation just fine, using the same smb.conf file I'm using now. Any ideas?

When you reinstalled did it overwrite your smbpasswd or lmhosts file?

Everything was overwritten, but most of the crucial directories were saved to a safe location elsewhere on the network. Anyway, the problem is fixed now. The problem was with the line in smb.conf that read "
Code:
guest user = pcguest
". However, when I did the new installation I neglected to set up a user account called "pcguest", so it choked. I changed that line to use a valid account, and that solved it.

Have to love those little details :)
Thanks for the note, however, because I just came about an inch away from doing the same exact thing on mine

For my next trick I will pull a hat out of a rabbit (if you think thats bad you should see how the pigeon feels...) :p

Hi there,

I have had the same problem and at the end I have added all users I need to access my Linux box manually in samba:

smbpasswd -a username

Then I set the samba box os level higher and set it as master browser

os level = 64
local master = yes

If you have a PDC on your network then let it set all network rights by synchronizing the PAM

smbpasswd -j domain name -r servername

I hope it helps
