accessing peachtree 2003 journal (database) 1

I would like to access peachtree 2003 journal (.ddf file i think) from a vb.net program. What I have seen from the post on this message board is that I need to set up a pervasive odbc dsn to do this. However I do not want to download the entire persits engine to accomplish this.
