I recently DROPPED a laptop, destroying the motherboard but thankfully not the hard drive.

Instead of messing around with it, I just bought a new machine.

I put the hard drive from the old machine into the new, and naturally could not boot. My solution was to partition the drive with Partition Magic - move the data on the drive into a partition at the end of the drive and then create a new partition into which I would install a fresh copy of XP. This was done.

So now I have a good copy of XP running on partition C:, and every file that was on my old laptop in partition D:. When I go into D: to copy my old files from my profile on the old laptop, I am given an error message saying that I do not have permission to access the files.

I know they exist because I tried using Knoppix on a CD as a workaround, but apparently I cannot copy from drive to drive with that.

So, I'm up a creek. How can I get around whatever permissions exist to access my files? I've read several posts in other places that say to use "Copy To" in the User Profiles control applet, but this old profile does not appear there for obvious reason (<-- just to make sure I don't get that suggestion).

What you could try and do is to take ownership of the files on the d partition.

See this kb link for more information on how to do this.

This should allow you to read and copy the files as you need.
