Is there any way for a user to access their mail archive using a program other then Notes? Can the mail be exported into some other format? My company has been sold and will close up shop in the next year and I’m sure that I will be asked this question; any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Notes databases can be accessed from MS Access via ODBC. Access has an ODBC driver specifically for that purpose.
As for exporting a Notes database, I do not think you have a ready-made command, nor will it export to a given format.
More likely it is the next mail program that might have routines to access a mail db and retrieve info and save it in its own format.
Most likely, you'll have to devise a script agent to go over each mail, detach attachments and save text in a text file (yes, you will lose rich text formatting).

Anybody have any other ideas ?

You can purchase UNIACCESS. This program will allow you to convert to and from multiple email packages. It works very well. We used it when we migrated to cc:Mail to Lotus Notes. We now have users leaving and going to a Outlook shop, and we convert their Notes to Outlook for them before they leave.
