Is there a way to configure my XP computer to not automatically use the credentials I logged in with to access different network resources like a file server? I want it to prompt me for my username and password instead of prompting it after it fails to login automatically.

See if you have any saved passwords in this location. Type control userpasswords2 in the Start Run box and on the resulting window select Advanced, and have a look at the "Manage Passwords" page.

In here you might find that you can create or edit/remove an authentication key that contains your user name and password and allows you to access resources on a network or another computer.
