I'm using SQL Server management studio express 2005.

I have the database up and running fine on my server, which hosts my webpage.

I can perform all my updates fine from home, when on that server but I was curious of how I can access this database remotely. How can I configure my laptop to communicate with this database when not on my home network but, say, at work?

Thanks.

Personally, I'd opt for setting up a VPN on your network.

thanks for the post.

Can you please elaborate on that info? I'm not following you...

What I mean by that, is that I would feel safer setting up a VPN to access stuff on my network (maybe even a DMZ at that) as opposed to making the SQL Server itself accessible via the internet. Granted, your SQL Server Express may not house information as critical as a typical business, but I'd rather not take that chance. If that is the route you want to go, then you want to post a question in a networking/security forum with information on how to learn to set up a secure VPN.

But then again, you might get other advice where someone has successfully deployed a SQL Server installation securely over the internet.

Use RRAS to make a VPN, or just open the port on the firewall and allow remote connections via IP.
