Accessing Memory Condition #1000

I have just loaded Photopaint 8 on a new IBM thinkpad and most of the program works. However, when I select an area with a mask...cut it...paste it...and try to rotate the new object...I get the error message.
PHOTOPAINT Condition #1000-MSEL-1228
Then the big red and white X.....and the message A PROBLEM OCCURRED ACCESSING MEMORY. PLEASE REFER TO THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT HELP.

Can anyone tell me what this could be?
