I've set up an FTP server at home(Serv-U) and I'm trying to access files via the internet explorer FTP function. The only thing is that I have a linksys firewall at home and I'm not quite sure how to get around it. I access the internet at school so the IP address is constantly changing so I cant just grant access using a single IP. I'm not sure if it's possible to get around it or if the firewall is even the problem but any help would be awesome.

Thanks

The easiest thing to do would be to check your home IP address before going to school, then access that IP address directly: ftp://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX.

You could also try something like Keep Me Posted: If you have a place on the web to upload the file to.

To enable FTP through the router you will have to forward port 21 (in the router admin) to your home machine's IP address.

izzyq,

Unless I am completely misreading your statement, the question of changing IP's is in relation to the client workstation when you try to connect to the FTP server. You don't know what the IP address of the workstation is in advance so you can not set the security of the FTP server to allow that IP address to have access. Is that correct?

Follow the instructions in the links I provided and you will be able to set the security to allow access regardless of IP address. You will basically be allowing the Linksys to forward port 21 and ports 50000-50100. This will allow you to provide both Active and Passive FTP modes and do security by user ID.

Hope that helps.

I thought he was referring to the ip change his router was going through. You may have to clarify but i believe izzyq you are saying that at times you get to school and try to hit the ftp site only to find that the Ip address has changed (the ip address of the router)?

1)What kind of broad band do you have? (just out of curiousity)
2)Have you configured the actual ftp machine to have a static ip? (you should)
3)setting up a router to forward port 21 - the default port- is simpler and more straight forward, especially if you are learning ont he fly.

1.) Download a copy of TZO.com
2.) Setup a 30 day trial account using one of their names. e.g. name.tzo.com
3.) Install the TZO client on the computer that is running Serv-U.
4.) Either remember the Ip address the FTP server has, or setup a static ip for that machine.
5.) Forward port 21 to the ip address of the FTP server. e.g. 192.168.1.x
6.) Finally, try and ftp to name.tzo.com

this is for users that know what they are doing.
basically the tzo client keeps track of the ip address on the WAN side of the linksys router and updates itself to make sure it always knows your ip address, finally this allows the domain name to resolve.

let me know if you still need help.

TheOldMan346,

Thanks for those links, they're pretty helpful. One problem I've run into after following your instructions is that my MS Outlook can no longer find the email server to send or receive. I can access the internet okay, but the email is out of comission. I'm running Windows XP if that may be an issue. I've followed the same instructions for another PC which is running Windows ME and everything is fine there.

izzyq,

No, XP should not be an issue. Can you ping the email server by name? by IP address?

In Outlook [what version BTW] can you test the account settings?
Tools > Email Accounts > View or Change Existing
Then select the account in question and click "Change". On the next dialog, click "Test Account Settings".

Where does it show failures?
