accessing directories from the absolute path

Hi all,
I am a programmer developing websites with a new Webmaster that I have a ongoing discussion with and am looking for an answer before I overstate my facts. Here is the scenario.

We are hosted remotely within the company on IIS5. Currently I am forced to cut and paste singleton files to the production server if I do not want to do a full publish.... I am of the belief that if the webs I am an admin on or more precisely the directories on the web server
are set to share, I can do this more easily. I have been warned of doom ang gloom of the system if this is done...any thaughts?
