Hey there,

I want to create a way to force a file to download when you click on it, rather than open it in the browser e.g. text or office format of some kind.

I think to do this i need to call whatever is called when you right click and 'save target as' ..... so to do this i need to access the browser in some way (??????)... and ActiveX will do this?????

Like i say I'm new to ActiveX entirely, but this shouldn't be too difficult, should it??

Any tips or pointers to sites would be great, cheers

What kind of scripting language are you using ?

If it's Cold Fusion (I presume not) I could help. To the link set the mime content to the file to application/unknown somehow and the browser will prompt for download.

p.s. You don't need active x for this (I'm new to this too)

I've been using mainly perl, and the usual javasript, but this is beyond those, in a workable way (that I know of!).
I hadn't considered coldfusion, but it isn't out of the question.

What you suggested sounds like a good theory, and i guess could be done with quite alot of scripting language (i.e. any that could affect the mime type of a download).

If I have any luck I'll post it here.

Cheers

Jez
