Hi

I'm trying to connect to an ip address ***.***.***.*** - i keep getting SQL server does not exist or access denied.
I am typing in the ip address in the server box and am using SQL authentication then typing in the login and password.
I read you need to set-up an alias in SQL's Client Network Facility. I did this creating an alias as the IP address using library TCP/IP using port 1433.

any ideas ?
thanks

also if i connect anyway and try and stop the server i get RPC server is unavailable - don't know if this helps

PING the SQL Server from your remote computer. Use the command prompt, type PING followed by the ip address. For example:
C:\> PING 123.123.123.123

If you get a reply, then your computer can 'talk' to the SQL Server. If it fails, you need to check connections. Are you on the same network? Is there a firewall blocking the connection (BTW-SQL Server default TCP port is 1433 and this is usually blocked at a firewall, same with UDP 1434).

Sounds like you've got a filewall between you and the SQL Server. Try telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 1433. If you get a blank box with a flashing cursor then you have connected to the SQL Server. If not then something is stopping you from connecting. You can also try telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 139. That will try to connect to the port used for file shareing (also the port used to start and stop services by RPC). If those are closed then you'll need to have your network engineer open the fire wall.

If you have the Microsoft Personal Firewall configured it will probally be blocking these ports, especially is you have Windows XP SP2.
