hi,

I've been doing some research and apparently in Access97 you have to do it manually (or write a program to do this).
Our database is in Access97 and I would like it to compact automatically everytime a user closes the application.
Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks so much!

Doesn't 97 have the "compact on close" checkbox on the database property pages? It's been so long I don't remember (we are using office XP).

Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

hi genomon,

Unfortunately, no.
I think it's only available on Access2003 or later versions.
That's why I've been researching on how to do it automatically.
We have several independent Access97 databases and I can't keep compacting each one manually. :(

Thank you.
I will look at it and try to build from it :).

Jenica,

I would strongly advise that you don't have the database auto-compact on close, for the following reasons:

1. If the database is split into a frontend and backend there should be little need for it - the frontend shouldn't need compacting.

2. If you run out of drive space whilst compacting this will corrupt the database and/or ditch a load of your data.

3. If the process takes a long time and the user ends task you run the risk of the same thing happening as in point 2.
