Access2003 opening Access97 database

Our company has recently updated most PCs to Windows XP and we have upgraded Office97 to Office2003. The problem I have is that we have one PC which has not been upgraded, so it runs on NT with Office97. The operator of this computer is constantly adding data to one particular database which has not been converted to Access2003.
Other users need access to this database as read only. When they try and use Access2003 to open the Access97 database they get a message "The database you are trying to open or convertis currently in use, or you do not have permission to open it exclusively....". If I close the database on the NT computer and then get the Access2003 users to open it as read only there is no problem. The Access97 user can then open the database and enter data.
Is there a solution to this annoying feature?
 
Have you tried to create a 2003 database with tables linked to the 97 ?

Under no circumstances enable Access 2003 users to open the Access 97 version in a manner which will let then use it while Access 97 users also use it. With Access 2000 this slowed down the operation of the database for all users dramatically.

Right now I'm supporting three versions of Access: 97, 2000, and 2003. Hopefully, your Access 97 will cleanly convert to an Access 20003 version. Assuming that is the case, then you can just keep both versions available under different names, such as MyApp.mdb and MyApp2003.mdb. The Access 2003 users will just use MyApp2003.mdb.

As mentioned, you must keep the back end database (where the tables are located) in Access 97, but that should not pose any problems.
