access windows registry

Is it possible to access the windows's registry of a client user?

I have a asp page that contain's links to several programs. I would like to show a link to open MS Word on the client computer, if the user has that program installed. I would like to 1:) view the registry, 2:) see where the default WINWORD.exe is located on their file system 3:) display the appropriate link for this file.
