Hi ,

I have my Ultra sparc running solaris 2.9. I can access that from my home office on the network. I connect to internet using the cable modem and can ping external sites (such as yahoo.com,cnn.com etc) from my server.
(IP address is 192.168.0.78)

I want to access this server from outside. For now, I am not very concerned about security, but would later tighten them.

How can I do so? (I have an external IP address assigned to my cable modem)

You will need to configure your cable modem to redirect certain ports, for example 22 for SSH, to the internal IP address of your Solaris system. See your modem documentation for details.

Thank Annihilannic,

I think you meant to redirect the port on the router. I have a wireless router and the server is connected to that.

All I did was -
1) Get into the router (192.168.0.1)
2) Redirect the telnet port to my server
3) Get the IP address assigned to my cable modem ( 4) Done...!! I can connect to that server now.

Any other easier way -?

You never mentioned the router, I presumed your cable modem was doing both jobs.

Sounds like you're in business, although I'd highly recommend using SSH instead of telnet.

Sorry about not mentioning about the router.

I couldn't find the ssh port on my router. I only had the telnet listed on the router.

How to use the ssh instead of telnet.

If you can specify ports by number, use port 22/TCP. Or, if you like, and the if the router is capable of it, you can choose any port number you like, and redirect it to port 22 on your Solaris server.
