Hello,

I set up a database on the network with user level security set. The password works fine when you access it from the desktop shortcut. The problem is you can also access it when you bring up the application from the start menu, but its no security. Can anyone please assist me with this beginners issue?

Thanks.

Did you use network security or the Access workgroup security? Network security is, I strongly feel, the best way to control access to the application/database. Access workgroup security is a quicksand pit that can create major problems down the road, especially when you reach the inevitable need to upgrade to a newer version of Access.

If you want to also control user access within your application, add a login form that your specify as the initial form to open, save the user's ID and access level (that you would set in a table of acceptables users and their passwords) in a public variable (so you can see the value in your other forms/reports). Then you could, for example, on your main menu form, make certain buttons not visible if you didn't want a user with a specific security level to be able to run the functions of that button.

I written many Access applications over the years and the one that includes workgroup security is a real nightmare.

I don't think you really have secured your database. But it could be that user Admin or group Users to has rights. Make sure that user Admin and group Users have no right to anything.

You might consider resecuring your database. Startout with the unsecured version of your database and try again. This thread thread181-934748 steps you thru the process.
