I am trying to Add a New User to a security file in Access 2003 - something which I have done several times in the past. Now I get error "Cannot update.Database or object is read-only". I have checked the permissions and neither the .mdw or the database is read-only. I can amend the data in the database.

Any ideas ?

The only thing that comes to mind is that it is locked...

You have more than one instance of Access open.

Someone else is using the security file.

Some program or dead session has the file locked? Restart your computer.

Think you were right about it being used by someone else ( I wasnt aware they used the database !).

Having got them out I can now add a new user.

Never had that problem in Access 2000 though - could do it while it was being used.

Many thanks

I'm surpried it was an issue... You might check to see if you both have the same permission (change) to the MDW file. If not that is probably the source of the locking problem.
