I have an office consisting of 2 floors with around 90 people combined who are running Windows 2000 sp2 client workstations and connecting to a Novell 5.1 server.
I am finding that various people are experiencing freezes (not all) when they try and save files to the network and when they attempt to browse the network.
The majority of people are ok, they are all running the Novell 4.81 client (oct 2001).
I have checked the communication for all machines and they are all connecting at 100mbps to the network via their internal NIC's...Slightly stumped!!!

If the workstations and the server are connecting to the network at 100Mb, ensure that all devices are running at the same duplex setting (ie. Half or Full).

Also, have you turned off File Cachine? At the server console, type the following:

SET CLIENT FILE CACHING ENABLED = OFF

Quote from Novell website:
"Caching of server-based files from the client is enabled by default in all recent Novell clients. However, it doesn't contribute noticeable to performance, and depending on your environment, this setting may lead to a number of possible problems. These problems cover anything from slow performance, to high utilization, to locking problems, and even server crashes. This setting will centrally disable the clients' possibility to cache files locally, and thus help prevent all those possible issues." -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

Thanks for your quick reply.
All workstations auto-negotiate to 100mb.
I will try the file caching method later today..could be just the fix I am looking for.

Are these workstations communicating via TCPIP or IPX or both? regarding TCPIP, did you setup SLP on your 5.1 Servers and workstations? If not, I recommend that you do so.

SLP is to TCPIP what SAP is to IPX.

Good Luck!

File caching is off anyway so I can discount that one, the 5.1 server itself does have SLP enabled.
The workstations communicate using both TCP/IP and IP/IPX
How is SLP implemented on the workstations?
