Access Performance issues

We are experiencing access (2000 and 2003 are running) issues when running an update or append query within a macro on our network. The database is out on a shared location on a windows 2003 server.

I am not sure whether or not our antivirus is scanning every the database before it runs through the query or if it scans through every record. Has anyone encountered this issue and if so what steps did you take to fix the issue.

It would be very hard to say without seeing the query and the tables structure.

Is it a simple update query on one table, or an update on multiple tables joined together?

Posting the SQL may be a good starting point.

it spans across the network. I have tried placing the database at the root of the directory thinking that shortening the path will speed it up but i have had no such luck. I changed the ODBC data source from the default value of 5 of page timeout to 5000. I still see the lague time when running a macro that calls and update or append query. When i copy everything over to my local environment (C) it runs a little faster. Hopefully this helps with an answer as I cannot figure out why access is running so slow.

Since it runs only a "little" faster, this would indicate an inefficient SQL statement for the update or append, not a network issue.

I can't give any more opinion until I see the actual SQL statement that is running slow.
