HI All,

We are currently using an Access DB that is updated each night. Our DB is increasing rapidly so am thinking of moving to a MYSQL DB. Myself having not much exp with Database admin stuff, could you advise whether I am thinking and moving in the right direction?

I plan to create a DB in MYsql, and perhaps write a routene so that my DB is updated each morning (from CSV files that i receive in my mailbox in outlook). Then I intend to use Access Frontend for MYSQL DB and provide these ACCESS DB's to various users.

Kindly advise.

thanx in advance

It is definitely a good idea. Acces storage features are limited compared to a full database server like MySQL.

MySQL administration is easier than what it may seem at first.
The web site offers a very good online reference and a downloadable version (.PDF) which I recommedn you get immediately.

There is no problem in importing .CSV.

Access as front-end to MySQL is a quick solution; however you may want to look at a better solution in future like creating a proper interface using perl, PHP, ASP, VBasic etc..

I'm certainly doing a very similar thing.

I now have a range of what were Access BackEnd databases implemented onto MySQL with Access FrontEnds being used as user interfaces.

The change to MySQL was 'leap of faith' for the client and their were unconfortable about converting over to some 'fancy front end' but going to Apache and PHP etc.

So we moved the back ends over ( We still haven't finished the process, some dbs still to be converted ) and re-wrote the FrontEnd interfaces to take advantage of the Client Server structure ( Pass Through queries, Unbound forms populated by ADO etc. )

One they are all in place and the user base are happy I'll look at migrating over to Apache & PHP etc.

'ope-that-'elps.
