I am using ColdFusion server side language to work with Access 2003 on a Windows 2003 server. I assume the server always has to have MS Office or MS Access software loaded on it for me to use an Access file (database) on the server?

Hi there,

You can have any file you like on the server (within reason) and access it from other client machines that do have Access installed on them.

If you wish to use the server to open or edit the database then you will need Access installed.

A lot of people run front ends on the client machines and keep the backends (tables etc) on the server.

HTH.

Peter.

Remember- It's nice to be important,
but it's important to be nice :)

The Access Jet database is just a file. There's no process or software around it. Access is an application that can process Jet databases but you're using Cold Fusion so you don't need Access in the equation at all. Your connector (ODBC or whatever) will know how to deal with the Jet file directly.

BNPMike is correct.

Although, being able to use the file in Access even on a network client may prove useful. Even then, Access on the client would handle everything and you do not need it on the server.
