Access.log effects Apache behaviuor

I have noticed that a large access.log file (~70MB)cause the Apache to reacted very slowly.
(I have not specified the rotatelogs command on my httpd.conf file.)
Did anyone encountered it as well ?
why does it happens ?

I would appriciate your help.

P.s
removing the access.log file and restarting the Apache solved the problem
