Hello, I am interested in your opinion on Access97 Linked Tables. We have upsized an Access application to Sql Server and are testing 3 ways.
Multiple users in the Access database (original form)
Multiple users using application (upsized with linked tables)
Multiple users using Application with all queries moved to stored procedures.

Is there any advantage to the linked tables method? It would be less work than the conversion of over 100 very complex queries to stored procedures. Can we assume any locking advantages using Linked Tables?

Our goal is 5-10 users writing proposals and not getting into locked out situations. The current Access application is popular but not meant for multiple users.
I would like to hear your opinion.
There is one problem with using MS Access97 as a frontend for SQL. When I attempted to do this, about a year ago, I noticed that alot of data was being wiped out. I still don't know why, or what I could have done differantly, but it seems that MS Access would NOT read the data from SQL correctly, and would always "kill" the data. This may have been simply a problem with ther Jet engine (I had not updated the engine at that time) or it may have been a dozen other things. All I know, is that I don't want to try THAT again, as it was more of a headache then anything I have done in a long time, and made me look pretty stupid, when I told my boss "I don't know WHY it is clearing the data."

Anyway, if anyone has had a similar experience, or knows how to keep this from happening, respond in this thread.
Thank you for the warning. We do have one group in our area using Access97 as a frontend to DB2 MVS on the mainframe. They are not having any trouble. They use Pass-through queries but do not have Access linked tables.
