Hey everyone. I have someone who needs me to go in, do a complete format and re-installation of windows. Here's the scheme we want it to be:

Windows XP (home OR Pro)
Admin account password protected
Account w/no password for her son
Limits set on what sites he can go to
No allowances for downloading files or programs
No allowances for installing programs
No AIM/MSN IM/Yahoo IM/ etc
Strict limiting on who he can email

Long story behind this, but suffice it to say that this needs to be done.

Is there a way to do that through windows or is there extra software that is needed? He's 26, he's reterded, and she's not worried about porn sites. But there ARE other sites that he goes to that she wants him to stop..

Any thoughts/help would be GREATLY appreciated

Chris

Whether you choose XP Pro or Home, you require to Format with NTFS so you can access and use the better security provided by that file system. As a limited user the son would be restricted and unable to install programs.

When the accounts for various users are created you will be able to select a password or leave it blank as in the case of the Son. If a blank password is used there will be no requirement to enter a password when logging on.

How to Configure Internet Explorer 5.x to Block Access to All But Approved Internet Sites.

See if this has possibilities. It is mainly used for ad blocking but will work with general sites also. Do a search of your system to locate the Hosts file and open it. You'll find instructions inside of it. It is similar to a notepad file. You just add banned sites to the list. Check the link for more details.

DEEP FREEZE IS THE STANDARD IN COMPUTER PROTECTION

Pro has GPO's that you can use to tighten security. These are not available in Home but there is this which is applicable to both systems.

You will have to look at what E-mail program you end up with and either prohibit access to it or configure it via any rules you can create.
