Ok, situation, I recently had the music folder networked between a couple of computers until my other computer broke, and I disconned the network, now I have this folder with about 3 gigs of music on it that has an error everytime I try to del, move, copy/paste it. 'Cannot delete <file> : access is denied' any help with getting it functional would be appreciated.

OS - XP Home. Not pro.

This may come in handy if you don't want to use Safe Mode to access the Security Tab.

Cool Tip #2: Security Tab in Windows XP Home
thread779-685055

Ok, fellas I tried to enter in Safe-Mode and add my User name to the ownership fields. Only problem was my name was not available to choose for Ownership, all it had was 'Administrator' and Administrators' (groups?)

I was able to log on as administrator upon loading in safe-mode but I wasn't able to change attributes for the folder I wanted.

That documentation is telling me to undo the attributes -r and -s which is system, What is the system attrib? And it didn't explain how to add users. It just tells how to take off the attributes. Is that what I still need to do? or add users?

Start by checking the Basics:

In Windows Explorer (not IE) Tools, Folder Options View. Uncheck "Use Simple file sharing - recommended"

Control Panel, User Accounts.

Add the usernames with passwords that you want to be able to use your shared resources.

Reboot.

Hit f8 early and often when your computer starts. Logon as username Administrator.

In explorer you will now see in the Properties Sheet (a right-click, Properties) a Security tab. Add your new usernames with full permissions to the Folders you want to share.

Steve Winograd has an excellent step-by-step guide:

Windows File Sharing - Simple File Sharing Disabled

"In Windows Explorer (not IE) Tools, Folder Options View. Uncheck "Use Simple file sharing - recommended"

That Option is not there in Win XP Home.. I have looked high and low for it.

The only username that is being used is created, I have a User name and Password for myself, just to keep people off of it. It doesn't show up in the fields for when I want to add it to give ownership to it.

The Simple File Sharing interface cannot be disabled in Windows XP Home Edition. Windows XP Home Edition-based computers always have Simple File Sharing enabled.

All Security Tab access is via Safe Mode (Unless you use the earlier mentioned "Cool Tip"). Including adding username to the permissions list and giving it full control. If the user has full control he should be able to then take ownership. In the Owner window highlight your username and click apply to change ownership.

linney is absolutely right and I am absolutely wrong. You cannot disable Simple File Sharing under XP Home. I must have known this several years ago, but my advice above is in error.

I have always applied this workaround, and am too used to being in this setting:

thread779-685055

You create a good workaround and get used to it and you mess up big time.....

Ok, fellas, so In which direction do I need to head.. I'm getting some mixed info and am getting confused?

Add users or Try to take off the attributes?

Ok, I am not wanting to share it.. I'm trying to actually make that entire folder, able to 'edit' so to say. right now I can only execute. not del, rename, copy. etc..

Logon in Safe Mode as Administrator, and make sure the group 'Everyone' has full permissions to the folder. You want to use the Security tab.

wow, I finally got it.. here's where I messed up..

I overlooked something simple (figures)

I was giving ownership to the right person.. or so I thought. in one of my earlier posts on this subject I was saying how the only two users that was in the fields was 'administrator' and 'administrators' what I forgot to notice was that administrators was a GROUP. and my account is in the administrators GROUP. duh.

so, I gave ownership to the group and it worked. I am sorry for the hassle on this. but, I thank you for your time, if there is anything I can do let me know.
