I have set up a Validation rule for each field in the subform property - len
([field-name]) >0 (testing to see that some data is input )
When creating a new record, I can tab over the fields without any validation
text message being triggered. What Is the solution to this problem?

For this purpose, I believe, you need to set your code in the "Exit" property for each control. Select the control, bring up the properties box, goto Events, select "Exit" click on the ellipse (...) and select Build Code. This takes you to the appropriate sub, i.e. YourControl_Exit, where you can enter your code.
