I have been programming on Access (all levels) for over 15 years and never seen this problem. I have access 2003 installed and I want to link an ODBC table from SQL 2005. I click on "Get External Data"; "Link Tables" and it shows the first link form. When I change the "Files of Type" to "ODBC Databases" the form disappears and nothing happens.
Is this an Access 2003 probalem or did I miss a switch somewhere?

Thank you.

Jerry

Do you have the info in the reg key referenced below? If not, copy that to a file with .reg extension, dbl-click it and try then.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Access\Jet\4.0\ISAM Formats\<SQL Database>]
"ExportFilter"="ODBC Databases ()"
"IndexDialog"=dword:00000000
"CreateDBOnExport"=dword:00000000
"OneTablePerFile"=dword:00000000
"CanLink"=dword:00000001
"ImportFilter"="ODBC Databases ()

Dear Jsteph,

I tried the registry idea, copying it into a text file with an .reg extension. I get an error that says " The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor"

Did I miss something?

Thank you,

Jerry

Dear Jsteph,
I looked at the registry and there is no line for "ImportFilter"="ODBC Databases ()". The other values seem to be correct.

Thank you,

Jerry

Jerry,
Did you copy the part that says:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

That line should the the first line. I just copied that from the post and saved, dbl-clicked, and it gave me the standard "do you want to import this to the registry" prompt.

If you can't get it to work via the file, I think you could add those keys manually, but the file should work if you copy it exactly as in the post, including the Version line.

Dear Jim,
I entered that missing line and the registry was updated, but when I click on "ODBC databases" in the drop down selection, it still disappears and nothing happens. I rebooted the machine and I also opened a new access database to see if that changed.

This is so frustrating!!

Does your normal odbc dialog come up outside of Access?

Either way, you may need to reinstall MDAC, I think it's version 2.8 now.

Dear Jim,

I have gone into ODBC connections and set up SQL and it connects OK.

What is MDAC and where do I get it?

Thanks so much for your help. I hope there is an answer here.

Jerry

Dear Jim,

I found the problem on another site!! It has to do with Norton Antovirus 2006 turning off Office plug-ins. I turned off the option and now I can connect to SQL2005.

Thanks for your help. Maybe more people will be calling about this and we can spread the word.

I had to go in Norton options/misc

You STILL deserve a star!!
