hi. i am new to sql. I am trying to run client tools on
my local computer for a networked databse. I have installed client tools and sp3a. I have successfully registered the remote database but when i try to connect it tells me "Access denied". I have read a lot fo web Info (and played around with login roles) but can't seem to make any progress. Note:

1) the server is up (and i have restarted a few times)
2) i am using a guest login that has been added
3) the computers are connected directly
4) both local and remote computers can ping eachother
5) SQL (on both computers) has no problem starting locally

any suggestions would be much appreciated.
thanks in advance.

What connection scheme (IP/Named Pipes)?

What roles does the guest user have?

hi. thanks for replying.
because i am new to sql, i assigned the guest user
all roles in the hopes that something would work. As
for IP/Named Pipes, I am using TCP/IP with DNS pointing
back to the local machine (gateway server). I am
not sure if that is what you mean, tho.

192.168.0.10 is running the gateway server with the db client tools and 192.168.0.12 is the database server.

any suggestions appreciated.

So you're using SQL authentication to connect in EM? I'd use Windows auth instead, and assign a group which includes admin accounts to the admin role in the server.
