Hi all,

I get an Access Denied error when trying to open PDF files which date back a year or so. I also get an error when opening dated Word/Excel documents stating permission denied. All these files reside in my personal "home" folder on the network. I believe my folder was "copied" or "moved" by someone or another account and that is causing the issue.

I tried to log on to the file server as administrator and added my account as the "Owner" of the folder but I still am unable to open those files.

Has anyone encountered this before or know of a fix?

you have to take over ownership on file-level (set the hook on apply to subfolder/files when asked)
disable inheriting permissions

Thanks for your reply Lemon13.
You mean I have to take ownership by setting these permissions by right-clicking on the file itself.
I will check this tomorrow but the last time I right clicked on the PDF file and selected properties, I could only see two tabs - General and PDF. That was probably when I was not logged in as admin.

nope, go to the folder where the files reside, right click-properties-security-advanced-owner, add ur account and mark take over objects and subobjects

if u still get access denied, disable inheriting and add your account / give it full permission

also check your effective rights on the file (right click-properties-security-advanced-effective rights)

Thanks Lemon13.
I will check it out today.
Just wondering, when would something like this occur.
Those files were created by the account I am using - which is a generic one e.g. helpdesk.
As mentioned in my first post, could it have been caused by a copy and paste rather than "move" by someone other than helpdesk or maybe a change of account name somewhere in the past?

Thanks Lemon13.
What I had to finally do was to select "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here..." for the permissions from the parent folder to be applied to that specific folder which files I could not open.

I am thinking that the unchecking of the "Allow inheritable permissions..." would have resulted in the same outcome.

It would be good if you could clarify that one point.

Nevertheless, you pointed me toward the right direction.
Thanks again
