access denied folder

Hi im fixing my friends computer and he has a number of files in his my documents folder on his hard drive, he needs a new hard drive and im copying the files across using an external hard drive case so it appears as a new drive via usb, but when i go into his my documents folder while browsing through the site it says i dont have access to the folder and it says access is denied make sure you have permissions to the folder or that it is not being currently used.
