This has been sitting on an Access forum for about a week with no response, so perhaps an ODBC guru will have an idea...

In Access 97, I can import an ODBC database easily:

File > Get External Data > Import
Files of type: ODBC databases
Select data source from Machine DSN tab (already configured)
Select tables to import
Voila! An Access db with the tables I selected...

In Access 2000, the same steps result in an error:
"The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data."

So the question: What difference am I missing in Access 2000?

It sounds as though you might be missing a Service Release from Microsoft. I have had the same problem when Appending tables together. You should be running at SR-1 at the very least.

Hope that gets you going. Good Luck.

Long time waiting, but at last a suggestion! Many many thanks!
Will let you know how it goes.
