Access a Windows 95 share with a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 1

I have installed a small ethernet network. The protocol is NetBEUI.
I installed a NT Workstation as server, but used a workgroup (not a domain).
The Windows 95 client can access the 'server' without problems, but the other way around is impossible.
I can see the W95 client in my network neighbourhood, but when I try to access it, it gives me an access denied.
I have installed file and printer sharing and made shares. Have I missed something, or is this just one of these bugs again? Please help?!

NT workstation, cannot be a server, for a domain.
It can be a peer to peer(workgroup).
Windows 95 has share level access on it`s shares, and NT uses user level acess.
So you must make 95 use user level access in the network properties.
Or you could try creating an user account on the 95 machine that is the same as the NT account.
SO if you logon on to NT as
username
password
then ceate a new user on the 95 machine, the same.
this will allow user level access

First of all thanks for your quick reaction.
Indeed I know that NTWS cannot function as a server for domains. Perhaps I should tell you the whole story so that you can get a picture of the situation.

In our laboratory were 8 standalone PCs. I installed 3Com fast ethernet cards and connected them (3Com 16 ports hub)by Cat 5 S-FTP cables. Most of these PCs are Windows 95 machines and two of them are NT Workstations. I also placed the extra NT Workstation referred to in my initial question. On this Workstation I connect a backup device. The idea is that this NT Workstation should copy certain data directories to its own harddisk at set times via the WinAT program. At a later time it then should backup the copied directories to the backup device. So now you see why the NT Workstation should access the W95 clients.

What really puzzles me is that the Windows 95 station can access the NT shares on the NT Workstation without any problem but not the other way around.
If I'm not mistaken any user can access shared directories on PCs in a workgroup as long as he knows the password to access them. I also believe that you can only install user level security when there is an authentication server (so a domain) which is not the case here.

Well I hope that this story gives you a picture of the situation and perhaps some new suggestions.

the problem you described sounds similar to a problem i had. I couldn't access a share on a Win95 from my WinNT Workstation. The Problem, believe it or not, was the letter "i" in the password of the share. I've changed the password to one without "i" and everything worked fine.

I had the same problem, but my network setup was a little different. My Windows 95 pcs had Novel Client 32 setup on them.

I finally figured it out by trial and error. I shared the files on the network. When accessing the files from a NT Workstation, I entered the name of my Novel Login for that computer and for password, the password for my share on the Windows 95 pc. It works.

I sure hope you figure this out. It can be frustrating.
