Access 97 problems

Hi,

We have a couple of PC's that still need to run access 97 for a couple of legacy databases we have ( they are in the process of being upgraded ) but one of the PC's went bang a couple of weeks ago, so have replaced the machine with another, this is where the problems starts... the OS versions are the same Win 2k with SP3, all with the same updates etc... but the new machine - sometimes the forms don't work ( gives default data instead of live ) then on some forms we keep getting 'The record set is not updateable' -- but on the pc that works OK all these things work fine.

Does anyone know what could be cause these problems?

I know the info I've given is pretty sparse but I'm not sure where to start looking...

Thanks in advance,

Mick.

What do you mean by 'default data'? Where is this data coming from?

Hi Max,

Thanks for your reply,

When i run some ( not all ) graphs instead of getting the data i'd expect, all i get is east, west, north and south.... I just thought this was the default graph totals? but i may be wrong.

Also I've noticed that any dropdown boxes will not allow me to choose anything except the defaul value, at first i thought it may actually be a code issue, but the fact it still works on the other pc leads me to think it's a version confict of some files etc.....

Mick.

I'm not too sure here, never used the graphs in Access.

One thing you might check, though, is that you have the correct jet dll. Compare the version of msjet35.dll on the machine that works with the one that's playing up.

You could rename msjet35.dll (eg to msjet35.bak) and copy the dll from the good machine, and just try it.

The last update of this dll is also available on the MS website (somwhere) - search for the dll name.

Note that you'll need to reboot to ensure the original dll isn't still in memory.

Max,

The dll versions were different, I copied the 'working' version and we can now update again :)

Just found another problem with the graphs, when i try to run some graphs I'm also getting runtime error 3075, but again if i run the same graph on the original machine it works great, maybe the graph versions? I'll check them.

Thanks for your help.

Mick.

By default not all dll files are installed. Try reinstalling Access97 utilizing the custom setup.

Hi Bubba,

Thanks for the reply, I'm not kidding you when i say I've installed Access at least 15 times on this machine, I have tried the custom install and installed absolutely everything, but still nothing, but now at least the read only problem is solved.

thanks again.

Mick

Mick- Did you take a look at Data Access on the custom install? It can be difficult looking for the needle in the haystack when you don't know what the needle looks like.

Purely guessing, but do you need to install MS Graph from Office 97? Its in a different section to Access.

Bubba,

Just done an add/remove and yes everything is installed including all the data access components.

thanks again.

Mick.

Bubba,
both machines have both office 97 ( only access ) and office 2000.
Mick.

Mick- This may not help but have you tried uninstalling Office2000 and Access97. Then install Office2000 without Access then lastly install Access97 and the Data Access sections.
I am running out of suggestions.

Yes Bubba, I've tried this once or twice but that didn't do the trick, I've tried installing them a few different ways, the PC thats working, i installed the non working pc in exactly the same way Office 97 first, then office 2000.

When i get error 3075 the error is function not available, which made me think there was a reference problem, but i checked them on both pc's and they are both the same....

Mick.

Bubba, That solved it, thanks for pointing me in the right direction, the problem was the references needed to be refreshed......the most likely cause would be version mismatches, but refreshing the references sorted it.

Thanks again for your help with this issue.

MIck.
