Let me start by saying that my computer originally had Office 2000 Professional installed and working correctly.

I have followed the MS knowledge base article number 241141 "How to install Access 97 and Access 2000 on the same computer" (unfortunately I do have that need, long story...). Everything seems to be ok with one exception; I can no longer import spreadsheets into Access 2000. It allows me to select the "New Table" button, navigate to where the spreadsheet is, select it, but when I click OK that is where things stop. There is no lock-up or crash, just nothing happens. When I try to do the same thing in the newly installed Access 97 I can with no problem and also export to a spreadsheet with no problem. I'm no expert, but I think that even though I specified an alternative installation directory for Acc97 from the default, some .dll's (I'm guessing it's these) have been loaded into a shared area accessed by both 97 & 2000 and the 97 version of the file has replaced the 2000 version of the file. Problem is, I don't know which files. Does anyone have any experience of performing this type of dual install and more specifically the problem described and how to resolve it?

TIA
Clive

I gave up on this last year. I spent a day struggling with the problem before deciding that a second PC was the simplest and cheapest solution.

I now have a scrap Pentium II under my desk with a keyboard/monitor switch so I can flip from the main XP machine to the Windows 2000 PC whenever I need to work in Access 97.

I have found the answer, strangely enough another MS knowledgebase article (292269). There was a dll named accwiz.dll in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder that was placed there by Access 97 during install. I renamed it by prefixing it with 97 then copied into the same folder the same file but the Access 2000 version. The version info is all explained in the KB article. After doing that, select the Start button, Run and type in the command line:
regsvr32 C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\accwiz.dll
This registers the correct version of accwiz.dll [with Windows I guess] and allows import and export to work fine with Acccess 2000 & Access 97.
So, I now have a fully functioning Access 97 & Access 2000 set up exactly as required.
For anyone needing to do the same thing, all you need to know is the information in two KB articles, 241141 & 292269; just follow the instructions.

Regards
Clive
