I am a long time user of Access and still use 2003. I have many apps written in VBA - though I am surely not an expert by any measure. I am wondering about your thoughts on upgrading to 2010. My employer is still on 2003, but will surely upgrade in the near future. I hope to convert most of them to 2010, but if not need to be able to recreate quickly.

Is 2010 much improved over 2003? Would you suggest I purchase it on my own just to learn it?

Thank you!

You're going to have to upgrade eventually anyway. So might as well start learning it now. Although 2010 has some nice new features, the biggest hurdle is getting use to and customizing the Ribbon. 2010 replaced the menubar with the Ribbon. (You can still use your menubars, but they are treated as add-ins. And there's no way to change them in 2010.) Also, 2010 no longers supports user level security (i.e. workgroups) unless you keep your files in 2003 format (.mdb vs .accdb). There are several ways to secure your database, but if you want the users to log in so you know who's using your database and assign them security roles per form/report, you'll have to build your own logon form.

If you start learning it now, you will have time to learn and create some standard Ribbons, etc, before your customer requests an upgrade. Consequently, you'll be able to get the upgrade done quicker and the customer will be impressed (maybe).

Without workgroups security, how does Access know the currentuser()?

Thanks,
Lori
