Hey guys,

I am trying to find a way to make modifications to an existing Access table. I have a field in my table for Zip+4 data. However, for the value of 0, the table only shows 0, and I want it to display 0000.

Without having to manually edit 70,000 records, is there a way to auto-change this value? If I do find and replace for 0, it will modify other fields with number 0.

Thanks!

Hi,

IMHO,any ZIP code data ought to be stored as TEXT. Zip Code fields are identifiers that you will never do arithmetic on. Hence, they are not REALLY numbers, rather TEXT values with numeric characters.

Your field could then have a default value of 0000.

Hi,
I'm sure there are several ways to do this, but I might separate the zip and the +4 into two separate text fields. Then you could set the default value on the +4 field to 0000, which would display if no value was entered.

If you needed to, you could then create a query and concatenate the two fields if you wanted a mailing list showing them together.

HTH,

Best,
