Access 2000 ApplyFilter error after conversion

Hi all
I am having this problem after I converting my Access Database from 97 to 2000.
I have a form with several subforms and when a user selects a checkbox or several(in a checklist) I need the details to be requeried but I am getting this error
"You can't use the ApplyFilter action on this window.....
I found an article on this error on microsoft Knowledge Base but implementing the suggested resolutions either just crashes the application altogether or creates runtime errors but does not solve this error

Can anybody help?
